Orosco Travel – Machu Picchu & Peru Tours

MANU 5 Days / 4 Nights

DAY 1: CUSCO - MANU

We depart early at 5:00 am. The 6-7 hour journey from Cusco includes stops along the way, such as at the Chullpas of Ninamarca (a pre-Incan cemetery). We then descend into the inter-Andean valleys to the town of Paucartambo, a place steeped in history. After visiting this charming town, we head towards Acjanaco, the gateway to Manu National Park.

From there, we descend into the cloud forest, where we’ll hike to observe countless orchids and birds such as quetzals, toucans, and multicolored tanagers.

Afterward, we’ll go to our lodge, settle in, and spend the night. Overnight stay.

After an early breakfast, we’ll search for Peru’s national bird, the Andean Cock-of-the-rock (Rupicola peruviano), which performs a unique courtship ritual. We’ll then continue our descent through these dense, lush forests to the village of Pilcopata, and then on to the port of Atalaya, located on the banks of the Alto Madre de Dios River. From there, we’ll begin our descent by motorboat to observe the enormous diversity of bird species, such as herons, vultures, cormorants, and more, until we reach our private reserve.

After lunch, in the afternoon, we’ll hike along trails in search of a variety of flora and fauna. We’ll also have the opportunity to take a night walk to see insects and amphibians native to that time of year and region. Overnight at the lodge.

We depart very early in our boat towards the clay lick, a wall of the Alto Madre de Dios River, where we can see different species of parrots such as the blue-headed parrot, the white-eyed parakeet, and possibly the scarlet macaw, among others.

Later, we will visit Lake Machuwasi, where we will leisurely paddle a catamaran to observe a huge diversity of bird species, including the hoatzin (a prehistoric bird), horned guans, red-headed cardinals, capybaras, herons, vultures, cormorants, and more. On our walk, we may observe monkeys, capybaras, snakes, and other species.

In the afternoon, we will hike along another trail to visit the Ceiba tree, one of the largest and oldest trees on the planet. Overnight stay.

After breakfast, we boarded our boat and navigated the Alto Madre de Dios River for 3 hours for an interesting and exciting trip to the Shintuya Hot Springs, surrounded by a beautiful Amazon rainforest. Once there, we hiked along a trail for approximately 3 hours (round trip) to reach some waterfalls. On the trail, we saw many species of flora and fauna typical of the lowland rainforest. Then we relaxed in the hot springs before returning to our Erika Lodge, where we spent our last night sheltered by this magical Amazon rainforest.

After a delicious breakfast, we’ll pack up and take our boat back to Atalaya Port, where our vehicle will be waiting to take us back to Cusco.

On the way back, we’ll have one last adventure: a visit to the Mirador Pico de Hoz Hummingbird Garden, a self-sustaining environmental conservation center where we can observe and photograph a wide variety of hummingbirds and other birds such as toucans, king vultures, monkeys, and, with luck, a sloth. We’ll have lunch en route to Cusco and arrive in the city in the afternoon. End of service.
