tambopata 4 Days / 3 Nights

DAY 1: ARRIVAL TO PUERTO MALDONADO

Airport or bus terminal reception and transfer to the Hacienda Tambopata office for registration. If you have large suitcases, we suggest repacking and taking only the essentials.

Transfer by road to our destination for approximately 2 hours, arriving at the banks of the Tambopata River. There, we will board a boat to the Hacienda Tambopata Lodge. Welcome and room assignment, followed by lunch.

In the afternoon, we will take an introductory hike into the rainforest where we will have the opportunity to see animals in their natural habitat, including amphibians, mammals, reptiles, and fascinating insects, among others. Overnight stay.

We wake up bright and early, at 4:30 a.m., to depart for the world’s largest macaw clay lick, Collpa Chuncho. The boat trip takes approximately 1.5 hours, and along the way, we have the incredible opportunity to see species such as capybaras, the world’s largest rodents, tapirs, and even the most beautiful South American feline, the jaguar. Many of our clients have photographic evidence of encounters with these magnificent mammals.

Once we arrive at the macaw clay lick, we’ll see hundreds of parrots of different species coming to eat clay from the riverbank. We’ll settle into our chairs and wait for one of the most beautiful natural birdwatching displays in the world to begin. Following the parrots are the three most colorful macaw species in the Americas: the red-and-green, along with the blue-and-yellow, all gathering to eat the clay, which is essential to their daily diet and helps them eliminate toxins. On a good day, you might see hundreds of these magnificent animals soaring overhead. A truly unforgettable experience.

After a hearty breakfast, our boat will take us back to Puerto Maldonado for a one-hour boat ride to Monte Amazónico Lodge – Lago Sandoval, where you’ll settle into your rooms.

After lunch, we’ll visit Monkey Island, located across the Madre de Dios River from our lodge. There, we’ll encounter various species, including the capuchin monkey family and squirrel monkeys that inhabit the island. We’ll then return to the lodge.

In the evening, we’ll search for white caimans, which are typically found on sandbanks in the Madre de Dios River. A flashlight will be necessary for this excursion. We may also see the capybara, the world’s largest rodent, which can weigh up to 60 kilos. We’ll return to the lodge for dinner and rest.

After breakfast, we’ll hike 3 km through the dense rainforest to Lake Sandoval (home to piranhas), one of the largest lakes in the Tambopata National Reserve. We’ll take a rowboat ride where we’ll see a wide variety of birds and monkeys of different species (hoatzin, cormorant, jacana, puma heron, vultures, howler monkey, capuchin monkey, black-headed capuchin, tamarin, and sloths). We might even encounter a family of giant otters (almost two meters long), which are endangered, and the largest caimans ever recorded, measuring over four meters long. We’ll return to the lodge for a typical lunch.

In the evening, we’ll take a walk where we can observe the diverse species of insects, amphibians, reptiles, and other nocturnal animals. Dinner and rest.

At 5:30 a.m., we’ll take a short walk along the Canopy Walkway, about 30 meters high, allowing us to appreciate nature from the highest possible vantage point. We’ll also have a panoramic view of the Madre de Dios River. From the platforms, we’ll observe different bird species, such as toucans, macaws, tanagers, and oropendolas—it will be a wonderful experience.

Breakfast and return to the city, transfer to the airport and/or bus station.
